Four red okra pods—and a tiny appetizer

This is my first time growing red okra, and I’ve loved seeing that unexpected pop of color in the garden.

Enough for an appetizer

Now that I finally have four okra pods, I might just fry them up for a little appetizer before dinner. There won’t be enough to serve the family, but that feels like a perfectly good way to celebrate my first red okra harvest.

The deep red pods and stems have been fun to watch, even before there was anything ready to pick.

Pick the ready pods

The best way to encourage more okra is to keep harvesting the pods while they’re ready and tender. Clipping off mature pods tells the plant to put its energy into flowering and producing more instead of finishing seeds in the pods already there.

I’m hoping these first four are only the beginning.
